Coal built Canaanville and then left it. The Canaan Coal Company pulled coal out of a 450-foot shaft on this hill and left behind the story of Appalachian Ohio: torn ground, emptied towns, wealth that went somewhere else. We are turning that around on the same ground. The mine's 1907 building still stands, and in it people now make things instead of taking them.
